Over enchiladas at Guy Fieri’s restaurant, I used the 90-minute break to calm down after that heart-pumping finish to the third level of the day. My one million stack put me back near average, with only eight nine-handed tables remaining. (Alas, Bloch had busted out shortly before the dinner break, in 74th place. Cloutier would eventually bust in 14th.)

I was in a strong position for a deep run. The final table was in sight. We would play down to the last three tables, or 27 players, this day, and I planned to be one of those lucky few who would live to see Day 4.

Just a few hands after play resumed, I was put to a decision for all of my chips. A player in middle position opened with a raise, and the player to my immediate right, on the button, pushed out an all-in three-bet. I peeked at my cards. Ace and a king. Although the hand was kind to me earlier, it had been my downfall too many times in Vegas. But still, it’s too strong a hand to fold in this spot.

So I called. The initial raiser folded and the player on the button turned over J-J. All low cards came on the board, and I was out in 63rd place.

“Never go all in without a pair,” my uncle Jerry, a non–poker player, would rib me later.

The $17,000 and change I got was a nice consolation prize, slightly topping my $16,500 score in the 2006 Main Event. That year, as a single man, I drove down to my dingy Binion’s hotel room and crashed on the lumpy mattress. After this success, I headed to the Summerlin rental house and curled up in bed next to my precious daughter.

Life was good.
